It's our fourth year!

Welcome to our fourth annual Shag Explosion! We're bringing back the Canadian Shag Dance Championships, and featuring the Impressions in Jazz Orchestra, Ottawa's premiere professional jazz orchestra treating us to authentic recreations of music from the 1920's, 30's and 40's!

What people have said about Shag Explosion

Congrats to the Swing Dynamite Team! You put on a wonderful event. From the minute I got there I was introduced to and dancing with all of you wonderful dancers including Bryn and Claudia and was heartened to feel so welcomed. Johnny and Jenna have a very smooth style that I would like to emulate and it was very helpful to continue learning from them. Zack and Maryse taught some extremely challenging combos that I have never seen before. The bands were amazing! I was particularly impressed with the clarinetist from the The Impressions in Jazz Orchestra. Man he could play! Despite the cold the likes of which this southern boy has never seen, I had a great time and I am looking forward to next year's event.

Great job once again with a Swing Dynamite event. There were plenty of reasons to be happy with this latest event including:

  • Having the amazing Adrian Cho and Impressions in Jazz Orchestra band for Saturday night
  • Not too much time used up by competitions, allowing for music and dance
  • Good out-of-town representation
  • Fabulous teachers:

Zack and Maryse always have interesting material to instruct in all dance forms, and have strength in explaining the important knowledge needed to lead/follow moves, and to make them really dance

Johnny and Rebecca - Not only are these very nice, approachable people, they are leaders in the Shag community, and bring a style that makes this dance appealing for a larger set of dancers, and that gives it a smooth class, lending it a greater visual appeal. Their passion for Shag is clear, and they are fine ambassadors for the dance. again, the catered lunch/dance on Sunday is a fine way to allow people to get together and talk, and dance one last time in a very relaxed atmosphere. Sooner or later other workshops will catch on to this clever practice.

Thanks again for a fine Shag Explosion IV.

We'll also have two different levels of classes to ensure dancers of all levels get the most out of the weekend! With all these teachers, all these classes, and a gala featuring Ottawa's Impressions in Jazz Orchestra, this is one weekend to remember!

Canadian Shag Dance Championships

Say WHAT? That's right! It's our second year! Check out the results of last year's Canadian Shag Championships!

What's Collegiate Shag?

Collegiate Shag is an exciting, fast-paced style of swing dancing emphasizing cool footwork and crazy kicks, that was especially popular among young people in the 20's and 30's. It's a dance that can be extremely fun and impressive-looking after an amazingly short time learning it, with lots of kicks and dynamic moves. Learn more about Collegiate Shag in the videos section.

Don't Miss the Party!

More than just a bunch of contests, the Shag Championships will be an amazing night of live swing music for an amazing night of Shag--and Charleston, Lindy Hop and Balboa!

The Collegiate Brunch!

A Swing Dynamite tradition: on Sunday we'll have a special Collegiate Brunch with DJ'ed music. Refuel, re-energize, practice what you've learned, and get ready for more!
